Friends Turn Dilemma Into Business Opportunity

Friends Cindy Winings and Chris Binduga met more than 20 years ago.  During their longtime
friendship, Cindy had always been known as the fabulous cook, while Chris had been a self-
described not-so-fabulous cook.  However, that began to change a few years ago when Chris
and her husband, Bryan, began the process of adopting three young children.

“At the time, Cindy was thrilled for us,” says Chris.  “But, I could see the horror on her face at
the thought of these three little ones being fed frozen dinners, takeout, or my not-so-fabulous
cooking day after day.”

So, Cindy did what any good friend would do.  She intervened.  She created a cooking guide to
help Chris with the basics, stocked her kitchen with necessities, and began teaching her some
of her culinary secrets.  Chris says it wasn’t long before she learned how Cindy had become
such a fabulous cook.

“What I’ve learned is that once you know the basics, the secret is in the seasonings,” Chris
says.  For years, Cindy had been using various seasoning blends in her everyday meal
preparation.

Cindy explains, “Seasoning blends are spices and herbs that are blended together in just the
right balance and measure to create the desired flavor for a dish.”

For Chris, however, there was a dilemma.  Many of the seasoning blends that Cindy had been
using were difficult, if not impossible, to find.

“For the most part, I bought all of the individual spices and would blend them myself,” Cindy
elaborates.  “Unique, quality blends were just not available.”

Chris admits that she was unwilling to go to the expense of buying all of the individual spices
and didn’t feel confident in blending them herself.  She also did not have the time or energy to
spend on blending seasonings since her family was about to more than double in size very
quickly.  Luckily, Cindy had a solution.

Cindy proposed that the pair start their own line of seasoning blends that would meet both the
needs of the gourmet and of the novice.  Within six months of that suggestion, the longtime
friends had teamed up to create Signature Spices, Inc., a gourmet foods business based in
Altoona, Pennsylvania, which specializes in seasoning blends.

“As it turns out, our opposing but complementary degrees of cooking skills worked very much
to our advantage while developing our original product line and later when we expanded into
sauces, teas, mixes, preserves, and more,” says Chris.  “We were able to keep in mind the
needs of all cooks.”

Cindy and Chris say their goal is to continue to offer unique, premium products that absolutely
anyone can use and enjoy.
